Checkout with your HSA/FSA card
Use your HSA/FSA card at checkout and keep more of your pre-tax dollars.
We’ve partnered with Flex so you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout. Paying with pre-tax dollars can reduce your out-of-pocket cost (actual savings vary by tax bracket).
Checkout steps
- Shop any Step One Foods products and select “One-time Purchase” before adding to cart.
- At checkout, if Shop Pay appears, choose Checkout as Guest.
- Select Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA.
- Complete a brief Flex telehealth consult to confirm eligibility and receive your Letter of Medical Necessity.

Within 24 hours, Flex emails an itemized receipt and a Letter of Medical Necessity. Keep these for your records.
Subscription & Reimbursement
Most savings: subscription discount + HSA/FSA pre-tax dollars.
Make any purchase, including subscription, with your regular payment method. Then submit your receipts to your HSA/FSA administrator for reimbursement. Some plans require a Letter of Medical Necessity.
Reimbursement steps

- If your plan requires it, have your provider complete a Letter of Medical Necessity template.

HSA/FSA FAQs
An FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and an HSA (Health Savings Account) are tax-advantaged accounts for medical expenses but differ in key aspects. FSAs, employer-sponsored, allow employees to use pre-tax dollars for medical expenses such as prescriptions and copays, but typically feature a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy where funds must be used within the plan year. HSAs are available to those with a high-deductible health plan and offer more flexibility, allowing funds to roll over annually.
- Pay Up Front (via Flex): On the product page select “One-time Purchase,” then at checkout select “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA” and follow the prompts.
- Subscription & Reimbursement (most savings): Make any purchase, including subscription, with your regular payment method, then submit receipts (and the Letter of Medical Necessity if required) to your HSA/FSA administrator. This path often combines subscription discounts with pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars.
Yes. Use the subscription and reimbursement path: pay normally, then submit receipts to your plan. Many customers prefer this because it can provide the most savings.
Paying with pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars can reduce out-of-pocket costs—often around 30–40%, depending on your tax bracket and plan rules. Actual savings vary.
HSA/FSA benefits can only be used for purchases that help manage a diagnosed medical condition. During the Flex telehealth questionnaire, it is your responsibility to select only conditions that a licensed healthcare professional has already diagnosed you with.
• Do not self-diagnose. If you are unsure whether you have a qualifying condition, please speak with your healthcare provider before completing the questionnaire.
• Choose only conditions that match your medical record (for example: high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, or obesity—as applicable to you).
• Flex and your HSA/FSA plan administrator may request documentation (such as a Letter of Medical Necessity and receipts). Keep these for your records.
• Providing inaccurate information can result in denial of payment or reimbursement by your plan.
• Your plan administrator makes the final eligibility and reimbursement decisions.
If trying to checkout with your HSA/FSA card be sure to choose “Checkout as Guest” so you can select “Flex | Pay with HSA/FSA.” If planning to buy a subscription and reimburse afterwards, proceed with Shop Pay.
Complete your purchase with a regular payment method and use the subscription and reimbursement path. Save your receipt and submit it (with a Letter of Medical Necessity if required) to your plan administrator.
Keep your itemized receipts and your Letter of Medical Necessity. If you pay via Flex, these are emailed to you within 24 hours. If you use the reimbursement path, ask your provider to complete the Letter of Medical Necessity template (link above) and follow your plan’s submission instructions.
Timing varies by plan administrator. Check your plan’s portal for expected processing times and any required forms.
No. Coverage decisions and reimbursement policies are set by your plan. Please consult your benefits administrator or a tax professional for personal guidance.
