How To Improve Heart Health and Prostate Health Through Diet

How To Improve Heart Health and Prostate Health Through Diet

As a cardiologist, I developed Step One Foods to help my patients eat better to lower their cholesterol and improve heart health. But if you're a regular reader of these blogs, you already know that what’s good for the heart is often good for the rest of your body.

An introduction to prostate health

November is National Men's Health Awareness Month, so let’s consider one of the most common health issues for men as they age: Prostate problems. About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lives. By age 85, about 90 percent of men have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. BPH can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms as well as bladder, urinary tract and even kidney problems.

As it turns out, a compound that research has shown to benefit prostate health is abundant in Step One Foods.

The benefits of beta-sitosterol

One popular supplement that targets prostate health, Super Beta Prostate, for example, delivers 250 milligrams of a specific plant sterol called beta sitosterol in each 2 tablet dose (hence the “Beta” in the supplement's name). Beta sitosterol has been shown to improve urinary symptoms and even reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

But did you know you could get THREE TIMES that amount of beta sitosterol from just one serving of Step One Foods?  Each of our products contains at least 1000 mg of plant sterols, of which around 75% is beta sitosterol.

What about heart health?

Plus, as a big bonus, if you’re eating Step One's products, you’re supporting more than just your prostate! We think of these additional health boosts as the “side benefits” of our foods. Not to mention the biggest benefit of all: By using Step One regularly, you’re helping improve heart health -- and, as you already know, heart disease is the number one killer of men and women.  Improve heart health AND positively impact prostate health?  If Step One was a drug, it would be a blockbuster!

Data on plant sterols

The data on plant sterols and prostate health is not as robust as the data on the benefits of plant sterols for heart health. But if your doctor has suggested that you take a supplement like Super Beta Prostate, consider talking to them about Step One Foods

We know many of our Step One Foods customers - and therefore blog readers - are women. And if that’s you, I'd ask that you consider talking to the men in your life about their heart and prostate health this month. Men are notorious for avoiding check ups and medical care, but a little nudge can go a long way.

The preciousness of health can’t be underestimated. It’s SO MUCH better if you never need to make an appointment with a cardiologist like me … or a urologist! As someone who takes care of male and female patients with heart issues, I can assure you that prevention is absolutely preferable to any treatment that any specialist might be able to provide.
