Helping those who help us

Helping those who help us

I'm excited to announce that earlier this week Step One Foods was selected as a participant in the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities.  This is based on our stated goal to help reduce the disproportionately high heart disease risk among First Responders, using food as the cornerstone intervention.

First Responders are shift workers with erratic work demands.  No wonder they typically eat on the run and frequently reach for convenience foods.  Unfortunately those are the foods that are high in sodium, saturated fat, and simple carbohydrates.  Exactly what helps fuel conditions that are so common in First Responders - like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and insulin resistance.  Step One Foods are the perfect substitutes because they’re easy to use and can go anywhere - and because they've already been proven to yield measurable health improvements.

The best part - as you all know - is that, unlike medications that are one-hit wonders, food has the potential for improving many things at once. Not just cholesterol but all components of cardiometabolic disease.  And even small changes in what we eat can yield big results - so long as those changes are the right ones.

That’s what makes Step One such a good fit for First Responders.  They're busy people with big jobs so they can't be be additionally burdened by a big list of health to-dos.  With Step One they can just do one thing and get a big list of health benefits in return.

I'm so proud that Step One Foods was selected by the White House as part of its initiative to end hunger and reduce diet-related disease.  First Responders take care of us. We need to do a much better job of taking care of them.  And I know Step One can help.
