Mindful Mother's Day: Nurturing Mom's Well-Being

Mother's Day is a cherished occasion to express our love and appreciation for the remarkable women who do so much for us. While traditional gifts like chocolates and flowers are sweet gestures, this year, let's also prioritize the gifts of health.

Here are some ideas to have a more wellness-focused Mother’s Day:

  • Instead of just indulging in sugary treats and heavy dishes (which we all love so who’s kidding who), consider treating Mom to a more wholesome feast that’s also brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables.  Remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being better - and having at least some better choices around will help everyone succeed at attaining that goal.
  • Although we naturally want to offer our Moms rest and relaxation on their special day, physical activity is actually better for restoring vitality.  So incorporate an outdoor walk into your Mother's Day plans.  Nothing boosts energy like witnessing all the beauty around us, with so many trees and flowers in full bloom right now.
  • When it comes to family members’ needs, like nurturing friendships, our Moms often put themselves last.  So think about including  her closest friends in the celebration - or give her the gift of camaraderie by arranging a separate outing just for her and her friends (who are likely Moms themselves).
  • Most Moms will say that their children and families are their purpose and joy.  But before they were mothers, our Moms had hobbies and interests that weren’t all focused on us.  Learning about what those were and facilitating her indulging in them again could make for an especially thoughtful and appreciated gift.

If some of these tips sound a bit familiar it’s because they’re the same tips I would provide for anyone trying to achieve healthy longevity.  Exercising regularly, nurturing social connections, pursuing activities that give us a sense of purpose and joy, and eating a whole-food plant-based diet are the keys to living long well.  And helping our Moms achieve these pillars ensures we’ll be able to keep celebrating her special day with her for many years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day!
